Trip 16A and 16B.  Arctic Valley: Exploring the Alaskan Alpine

Cost: AOS registration fee is $30 per person (covers van and gas).

Meals: No meals provided.  Instructions will be given on where to order and pick up a boxed dinner.

Trip Description: We’ll drive to Arctic Valley Ski Area (closed in the summer), an excellent alpine setting with spectacular views over Eagle River, Anchorage, and the Chugach Mountains. From the parking lot, we will set out on foot for a short 1-mile hike up to a saddle with great lookouts; from the saddle; intrepid hikers can optionally ascend either Rendezvous Peak or Mount Gordon Lyon, either of which would add a half mile and a little over 500’ of elevation gain in return for a potential view of Denali and the Alaska Range if weather permits. In total, expect about 3 miles of hiking with gradual elevation gain.

Likely species: Spruce Grouse, Willow Ptarmigan, Rock Ptarmigan, Wilson’s Snipe, Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Alder Flycatcher, Say’s Phoebe, Common Raven, Black-billed Magpie, Horned Lark, Violet-green Swallow, Black-capped Chickadee, Northern Wheatear, Swainson’s Thrush, Hermit Thrush, American Pipit, Common Redpoll, Fox Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, White-crowned Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Wilson’s Warbler.

Recommended Gear and Cautions: Windproof layers! Rain jacket, warm layers, gloves, hat, hiking boots, mosquito repellent, food, and water.
